Portuguese newspaper A Bola have taken steps to correct what they believe to be mistruths from English media reports about William Carvalho and Everton.

A Bola say the reports claimed that £20m should be enough to take the player from Sporting, therefore he was considered to be a cheaper option for the Toffees in comparison to signing Axel Witsel from Zenit.

In their Wednesday newspaper, they say Sporting would only sell William Carvalho for his release clause, which is nothing less than €40m (£33.5m). Previous reports from Portugal have stated the player’s release clause as €45m, A Bola may have made a typo.

€45m is more than Zenit want for Witsel.

Carvalho has just extended his contract with Sporting, and his new deals runs until 2020. It’s usual for the Portuguese club to set a high release clause just to have more power to negotiate, but after the midfielder’s good campaign at Euro 2016, they’ve got even more power now.

Before Euro 2016 there was talk in Portugal of a cheaper sale, to help Sporting ease their financial concerns, but the tournament has changed things.
