Over the past month or so we’ve brought you various updates on Everton’s move for Argentine midfielder Santiago Sosa.

The Blues were keen on the young midfielder this summer but had been struggling to get a work permit for him.

The last we heard on the move was an update courtesy of Olé, who said negotiations had ‘cooled down’ amid the efforts to get the player to Goodison Park. In fact, he was set to return to River Plate’s youth squad and continue with them.

That update came on the 25th of June, and there’s been little on it since then. TNT Sports have covered it now, though, and it seems things aren’t looking good for Everton.

According to them, ‘Sosa was rejected by the Premier League’, and as such ‘he does not have the way to play for Everton’.

They claim the club have now hired a specialist to try and get the young Argentine a work permit and are waiting until next week to see if it can still be done. However, the chances of it happening are very small at this point.

It’s later explained that River Plate need the money from Sosa’s sale and if they can’t secure it, they will have to sell other players.

At the minute, though, it doesn’t look good for the Toffees. The hiring of a specialist shows they’re definitely keen on the midfielder and River are happy to sell as well.

The work permit laws are tough to get around, though, and Sosa’s lack of playing time was always going to be challenging to overcome in that regard.

If Everton are as keen as they seem, perhaps Sosa is one they could sign now and loan out in the meantime, as they’ve done with Henry Onyekuru over the last two years.
