On June 6th, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain that Joel Robles was ‘very close’ to leaving Everton signing for Getafe.

Having been linked with a string of Spanish clubs, the Getafe opportunity presented the chance of a real fight to be first choice, which most of the other opportunities hadn’t.

A couple of days after that, Everton announced they won’t be renewing Joel’s contract, which expires at the end of June, and would therefore be releasing the player.

Now Spanish newspaper report Joel moving to Getafe is ‘advanced’ and expected to be announced this week. Joel is from Getafe, a city near Madrid, and was with the club’s youth system before leaving for Atletico Madrid.

The goalkeeper came through the ranks at Atletico, before going to Rayo Vallecano and Wigan Athletic on loan, and then signing for Everton permanently.

Turning 28 years of age this month, it’s time for Joel to be able to have regular first team football and he’ll hope that’s the case at Getafe, returning 11 years after he left.
