Cenk Tosun is set to miss six months with a knee injury in what will be a significant blow to Everton’s summer transfer plans.
The Turkish striker, who joined the Toffees in a £27m deal from Besiktas in 2018, is currently on loan at Crystal Palace after being deemed surplus to requirements at Goodison Park.
The loan deal included an option for the Eagles to make it permanent for €20m should his move turn out to be a successful one.
There was hope that would happen too, with Tosun bagging a goal in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City midway through January to get his time in London off to a flying start.
However, that’s now come crashing down, with TRT Spor reporting he is set to spend six months on the sideline with a knee injury.
Rumours of a long-term injury began to circulate in England earlier this week, with reports stating that Crystal Palace were waiting to discover the results of a scan.
That will come as a huge blow to not only Turkey but Palace and Everton too, who will have all had plans for Tosun in the coming months.
Everton, in particular, will have been hit hardest, with Marcel Brands likely to have had Tosun high on the list of saleable assets for the summer.
The Blues will need to reduce their wage bill and raise funds from sales to make room for their grand ambitions under Carlo Ancelotti, and Tosun was a prime candidate for sale, either to Palace or elsewhere.
That’s now not going to happen after this injury, as a six-month layoff wouldn’t see him returning until the beginning of September at the earliest.
It now remains to be seen what their plans are, and whether, with Tosun injured for the rest of the season, he’ll be making a return to Merseyside to start his rehabilitation.
Brands, meanwhile, will have to find a way to negotiate around what will undoubtedly come as a major setback to his plans for the summer.
