Everton star Amadou Onana has refused to 100% commit himself to the club moving forwards and admits he enjoys international breaks and linking up with “high quality players”.
The midfielder has been speaking to La Capitale ahead of this international set of fixtures, when he will again be a key player for manager Domenico Tedesco.
The youngster has been going from strength to strength since his move to Everton from Lille last summer, establishing himself as a key man under Frank Lampard and Sean Dyche as well as on the international stage with Tedesco.
His performances have not gone unnoticed and rumours about a possible exit from Goodison Park have been swirling since January, when there was apparent interest from Chelsea.
Manchester United were also credited with an interest in the summer but no move came about, with both clubs instead strengthening their midfields with other players.
That’s not stopped the rumour mill from churning, though, with it still believed Onana is being looked at by several clubs and Everton’s perilous financial position meaning that a big sale continues to be mooted.
He’s not going to stop that happening either, admitting he does not know what the future holds but insisting his focus is 100% on Everton.
“I’m not going to say that it (international duty) is my main source of motivation because I take very seriously the task that I have with Everton, namely, to help the club to survive,” he said.
“But I must admit that this change in atmosphere and finding a team with high quality players changes the mood. Mentally, it does me a lot of good.”
“That was my goal at the start of the season,” he added when asked if he sees himself playing at Everton for the whole season.
“But like I said, I don’t have a crystal ball. I am not able to tell you what will happen in the future. For the moment, I remain 100% focused on my performance on the pitch. This is what will determine my future and that of the club.”
