Everton star Amadou Onana has admitted he had to “watch out” while playing for Belgium after finding himself in a more defensive role for his country.
The midfielder was a starter for Belgium in their 3-0 win over Sweden last night, featuring in midfield alongside Kevin de Bruyne and Yannick Carrasco and spoke to DH Sport after the game.
The game saw him handed more of a defensive role than he has become accustomed to of late, with the midfielder having played in something of a box to box role since his move from Lille in the summer.
Previous Blues boss Frank Lampard saw him as a player capable of contributing at both ends of the pitch, although he was not particularly successful in helping the Belgian to develop into such a player.
Dyche has continued to use the Belgian in that manager, albeit in a side that is less open defensively than Everton were under Lampard’s leadership.
It seems his international manager sees the Everton in a different role, though, employing Onana more as a defensive midfielder alongside the creative talent of Carrasco and De Bruyne.
It was a role the Everton man was more than happy to play, although he admits it lead to one problem he had to be wary of.
“I felt quite comfortable and I think it showed,” Voetbal Primeur report him saying.
“At Everton I have a more attacking role, but when I went up I turned around and no one was behind me. I had to watch out.
“I play where the coach needs me. It’s also good that I vary my game. I have to learn to play in different roles. I picked up balls and that was my job for the day.”
