On Friday it would have been no surprise if Aymen Abdennour had been an Everton player by Monday. The story was moving so quickly in the Valencia media that they were almost pushing a deal over the line.
The most exciting part of the claims was that Valencia owner Peter Lim was said to be travelling to England on his private jet, with Abdennour to Everton being one of the matters on his agenda.
On Everton’s side in trying to sign the defender would be Valencia’s will… they want to sell him. Signed from AS Monaco last summer, for between €20m and €23m depending on who you choose to believe, Abdennour was one of the players the club picked to take to market after missing out on the Champions League.
Abdennour didn’t have a great first season in La Liga, and Everton would surely only be interested because of his previous good reputation. That said, they may well have had second thoughts.
Monday’s edition of Marca has a small piece on Valencia transfers, and their manager wanting several players to come in urgently. That means exits but Marca say Abdennour’s route out, and that of Shkodran Mustafi, has been blocked because the club haven’t received final bids yet.
That may change as quickly as today, with a break over the weekend, but it would be no shock if Everton are having second thoughts.
