Everton goalkeeper João Virgínia ‘is returning’ to the club early from a loan deal at SC Cambuur after an injury brought an end to his season.
That’s according to Leeuwarder Courant, relayed by Voetbal Primeur, who say the goalkeeper ‘leaves through the back door’ and will return to Merseyside to continue his rehabilitation.
Virgínia has been on loan with the Dutch side since the summer when it was made clear he was not a part of Everton’s plans this season.
He had been a regular for them in the first 17 games of the season but was dropped in favour of veteran Robbin Ruiter, with coach Sjors Ultee admitting they could not continue after ‘uncertainty and crazy actions’ from the Everton man.
The deal had been set to run until the end of the summer, but Virgínia is now returning to Everton early after an injury threw a ‘spanner in the works’ of the plan.
He is continuing to work on his recovery with the Toffees, where his contract runs until next summer, but he is unlikely to have much of a future there either.
He departs the Netherlands with a record of 28 goals conceded and four clean sheets in 17 games and a loan spell that doesn’t appear to have worked out for him, Cambuur or Everton.
