Everton midfielder Amadou Onana needs to learn to read situations better if he is to progress as expected.
That’s according to Marc Degryse, who believes the Everton star is still “too impetuous” in his play at this moment in time.
Onana has been impressing for the Blues since arriving in a big money move from Lille in the summer transfer window.
He quickly established himself as a star for Frank Lampard’s side with a series of impressive performances in a midfield three alongside Alex Iwobi and Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His displays earned him a call up to Belgium’s World Cup squad, with many in his homeland calling for manager Roberto Martinez to hand him a permanent spot and replace veterans such as Axel Witsel.
That did not happen, with Onana only managing 45 minutes in the second half of the win over Canada and 60 minutes in the defeat to Morocco.
He ultimately missed the 0-0 draw with Croatia that saw Belgium knocked out because of a suspension after picking up yellow cards in his first two appearances, and Degryse believes that area is one that the Everton man has to improve in.
“Energy, leadership, duelling power, running ability, enough length to win duels, a good mentality, infiltration ability as well as two-footedness,” Voetbal Primeur report him saying.
“Those are a lot of qualities. Only sometimes he is still too impetuous. He goes for every contestable ball.
“Sometimes it is better not to go into the tackle, he still has to learn to recognise those situations better. But that Lavia-Onana duo promises for the future.”
