Last week The Independent linked Everton with a shock move for Julian Draxler. The Wolfsburg player had granted a revealing interview to German newspaper Bild, in which he made it abundantly clear that he wants to leave the club.
The Independent claimed Everton stood a chance of forcing a move because Draxler has a €75m buyout clause. In an official statement, Wolfsburg then made it clear that any clause in Draxler’s contract isn’t applicable until next summer.
Now the amount has been called into question too. German magazine SportBild quote Wolfsburg sporting manager Klaus Allofs as saying: “The correct amount wasn’t said.”
Following on from that, SportBild say they can reveal that Draxler’s actual release clause is €110m.
Yes, €110m.
Honestly, €110m.
That would smash all German records, and most world ones.
But it seems strange. Draxler has made it clear he only saw Wolfsburg as a stepping stone, and so agreeing to such a clause wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do.
But the German international has also spoken about verbal assurances at the time he signed, perhaps he’s been quite naïve.
At the money being mentioned, Everton will surely walk away from any interest they may have had.
