Cast your mind back to the January transfer window, and you’ll remember Everton trying to get a striker through the door.

The decision to let Cenk Tosun go back to Besiktas left the Toffees a little short, and they spent the end of the window scouring the market in search of a late replacement.

They eventually settled on Josh King, who arrived on a six-month deal which is basically a trial period to try and secure a longer contract in the summer.

Before the Norwegian’s arrival, there was plenty of talk about Bayern Munich’s Joshua Zirkzee, with Everton said to have been in active negotiations with the German giants over a potential move.

That never happened, and the player instead went on loan to Parma, who also have a €15m option to make it permanent in the summer.

Well, Sky Sport Germany cover the player today, and things are not exactly going to plan. They explain how 2021 has been ‘anything but good’ for Zirkzee, who can’t get going in Italy.

While Parma and Bayern had high hopes for the loan, it’s not working out well, with Zirkzee yet to make a start or register a goal. In fact, he’s only managed four short appearances and 108 minutes in total.

That’s left his future ‘more open than ever’ as Parma’s option is only valid if they manage to stay in Serie A, which looks difficult at the minute given they’re 19th, four points from safety and Torino in 17th have a game in hand.

As things stand, there are ‘many indications’ that Zirkzee will be returning to Munich, and that’s where Everton could come in again.

Sky back up their interest in the striker and say a proposed loan deal in January ‘broke up’, but there’s every chance that interest could be revived come the summer.

Everton will still need a striker at that point, and Zirkzee fits perfectly into the type of signing Marcel Brands likes, young with plenty of potential and future value.

With things not working out at Parma and him likely to return to Bayern, who also aren’t that keen on keeping him, it could be one to keep an eye on moving forwards.
