Everton were one of the contenders to sign David Luiz this summer, according to claims from Brazil.

Outlet Globo Esporte says the Toffees were one of the many clubs who were interested in the 34-year-old, who ended up signing for Flamengo last week.

What makes the story a little more interesting is that perhaps Everton had David Luiz as a target for a long time, because the story claims Carlo Ancelotti had been trying to take him to Real Madrid as well.

It’s said the manager called the defender and talked about his plans. One of the issues, however, was the lack of a place for a foreign player in the squad.

Besides Everton and Real Madrid, David Luiz was also wanted by Benfica, Lazio, Marseille, Lille, Atletico Mineiro, Corinthians and Al-Rayyan.

In the end, his wish to return to Brazil spoke louder. The defender has a big desire to prove himself in his country and not be remembered for the 7-1 loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup, and was attracted by the strength of Flamengo’s fanbase.
