Despite Manchester United still having the option to extend David De Gea’s contract by a year, there has been little talk of it happening so far.
The goalkeeper himself has hinted he would like to stay at Old Trafford, but despite some very solid performances after a shaky start under Erik ten Hag, the Dutchman appears to want someone new going forward.
One of the names often linked with Manchester United of late has been André Onana, now at Inter Milan, with Corriere dello Sport pushing it again on Tuesday.
The Italian newspaper explain that it’s ‘above all’ the Red Devils who are keen on the Cameroon international, with the Serie A side knowing they want ‘no less than €40m’ from a transfer.
That’s because they need to make a big sale in the summer, and while they thought that would initially be Denzel Dumfries, the right-back’s stock has dropped quite considerably of late, leaving them with no choice but to look elsewhere to make their money.
Onana is the most logical option, seeing that he arrived on a free and would represent a great profit, and Manchester United are the club that have ‘moved in the most concrete way in the wake of Ten Hag’s indications’.
The manager knows the 27-year-old well from their time at Ajax Amsterdam together, and he has ‘expressed a desire to change’ from the long-serving De Gea, wanting ‘different characteristics’ from the next man, ‘such as the ability to play with the ball at his feet’.
While nothing has been decided fully just yet, the ‘next few weeks will serve to define the plans of the Red Devils’, with Onana also potentially arriving on top of the Spaniard’s contract extension being triggered to allow a ‘softer changeover’.
There is one question we need to ask from all this, though: Won’t somebody think of Dean Henderson?
