Marco Borriello has been speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport about various aspects related to his career, including his shock transfer to West Ham United.
Now 43-years-of-age, the forward moved from AS Roma to West Ham on loan. That switch happened in 2014 and it’s fair to say it didn’t really work out for anyone involved.
Roma wanted rid and had been looking for someone to pay them a transfer fee. That proved too difficult to find and therefore a loan to West Ham was agreed.
The transfer itself was a complete disaster. West Ham paid a relatively high loan fee at the time, and didn’t get much back for their buck. Indeed, Borriello made just two appearances as a substitute.
Then he suffered a calf injury and wouldn’t play for the Premier League club again. His time at the London club essentially last for a period during January and February 2014.
West Ham move was a complete disaster
Asked about his move there, Borriello is quoted as saying: “I was often a starter (at Roma). Then I suffered a fibula injury, and in January they decided to focus on Destro, who was a major investment by the American owners. I said goodbye and went to West Ham, essentially never returning.”
Asked if he’d made mistakes as part of earlier career and perhaps been distracted, Borriello said: “I don’t know if I could have had a better career. But I can say I’ve always given my all wherever I’ve played. If my fault is falling in love with a famous girl (Belen Rodriguez), then I give up. Photographers, if you notice, only snapped paparazzi of me in the summer, on the beach. During the winter, during football season, it was very difficult for me to end up in the papers for that reason. And even today, it never happens.”
