Newcastle United could face competition from Barcelona in the chase for Real Betis’ Natan this summer.
The centre-back’s performances for the La Liga side have seen several English clubs take notice.
On April 30th, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain that Newcastle United, West Ham United and AFC Bournemouth are keen on the defender with a €30m valuation.
Last week, the Magpies sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and plan to use those funds to sign Natan and his teammate, Abde Ezzalzouli.
The Premier League side are showing interest in the duo. Three days ago, we relayed news of Abde ruling out Eddie Howe’s side as an option.
Barca make contact for Newcastle United target
Natan moved to the Andalusian club on loan from Napoli in 2024 and then joined them permanently last year.
The centre-back’s performances have not gone unnoticed. That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who state Juventus and ‘especially Newcastle’ have made contact to ask about him.
Estadio relay El Chiringuito’s claim that recently, Barcelona sporting director Deco had a meeting with the 25-year-old’s agent, André Cury. The latter knows Deco from his time at the Camp Nou as their scout and advisor.
The meeting was to ask about Natan as Hansi Flick has asked Deco to sign a new central defender this summer. However, Deco didn’t discuss any offers or make further advances to sign him.
Natan has expressed his desire to play in the Champions League with Real Betis next season.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side set a €45m price last summer and that hasn’t changed now. They could settle for a slightly lower fixed fee, with bonuses taking it close to the desired price.
For now, Real Betis’ plan is to retain the South American and Abde Ezzalzouli and sell other players to improve their finances. Natan and the winger will only be sold if there’s an ‘exceptional offer’.
Newcastle United need to be convincing
With Natan and Real Betis not really open to a transfer, Eddie Howe’s side will have to convince both.
If not, Newcastle United would have to look elsewhere, if they wish to strengthen their defence.
The Brazilian’s contract expires in 2030 and he’s valued at €30m by Transfermarkt.
