Manchester United signed Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley in January and he has one goal from eight matches for the Red Devils.

The Dutchman is yet to open his account in the Premier League and could return to his parent club after this season. This and Anthony Martial’s poor injury record would see the Red Devils look for a new striker in the summer.

Recent claims have indicated Napoli star Victor Osimhen is one of the main targets for Erik ten Hag’s side.

At the weekend, Gazzetta dello Sport explained Manchester United are ready to open an auction to sign Osimhen, who has 18 goals and four assists from 22 games this season. It was also stated the Premier League side could offer a ‘boatload of money’ to seal the deal.

There was no mention of the fee Manchester United are ready to invest or what the Naples club would need to sanction the Nigeria international’s sale.

Italian journalist Ciro Venerato has discussed the Serie A side’s plans for the former Lille man’s future, and mentioned Manchester United’s interest.

“Napoli are making the appropriate assessments on the future of Osimhen. There have been contacts in recent days for a possible renewal: De Laurentiis would be willing to offer a salary of €6.5/7m per season,” Venerato told Rai 2’s La Domenica Sportiva, relayed by Napoli Magazine.

On the trail of the Nigerian, however, there are various English clubs, especially Manchester United and Chelsea. The novelty concerns the striker’s price tag: if the Blues bought Enzo Fernández for €120m, Osimhen’s price tag can cost as much as €160m and can still grow.

“In the meantime, Napoli are evaluating the alternatives, namely Haller from Borussia, David from Lille and En-Nesyri from Sevilla.”
