Eric Dier spent over nine years at Tottenham Hotspur before leaving them for Bayern Munich in January 2024.

The Bundesliga giants initially signed him on loan and made his stay permanent later that year.

Bayern Munich won the title last season, and it was the first silverware of the 31-year-old’s playing career. The former Tottenham man then left and completed a move to AS Monaco at the start of this month.

Thursday’s edition of Nice-Matin has published an interview with the player, who said winning the title with Bayern Munich has so far been the best moment of his career.

Dier was part of the Tottenham squad that lost the Champions League final to Liverpool in 2019. He player 365 games for Spurs and majority of them were in the heart of their defence.  During his time at the north London club, the new Monaco signing played alongside Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

Dier spoke to the French newspaper about the role of the former Spurs duo in helping him improve his game, mentioning this when asked about his childhood idol.

“As a child, I didn’t have a football idol, but I really liked Nemanja Vidic, Gerard Piqué, and Rafael Marquez when he was at Barcelona,” he said.

“When I turned professional, I kept what the other defenders instilled in me. At Tottenham, when I was younger, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld taught me a lot.

“At Bayern Munich last year, coach Vincent Kompany helped me a lot with details, whether it was positioning, finding solutions with the ball, or movement. He played in that position and was a great player, so he taught me a lot.”
