On June 9th, Calciomercato reported Newcastle United are showing strong interest in AS Roma’s Roger Ibañez.
Later that month, we covered claims made by Il Messaggero that the Magpies are ready to offer €30m to sign the defender.
These reports came before Newcastle signed Sven Botman from Lille, yet despite the Dutchman’s arrival at St James’ Park, reports in Italy state Eddie Howe’s side are still in the picture for Ibañez.
Il Messaggero, as relayed by Romagiallorossa.it, explain there are ‘English sirens’ for the 23-year-old. Only the Tyneside club are mentioned, and it’s said they ‘like’ the player.
The Brazilian initially joined the Serie A side on a loan deal from Atalanta in 2020 and his stay there was made permanent last year. He signed a four-year deal, and Roma estimate his valuation to be ‘at least €20m’.
For now, Newcastle and AC Milan like the South American and have not taken any steps to sign him. Roma went to sales to balance the purchases Jose Mourinho requires, so the suggestion is there’s a deal there to be done.
