In the past few days, we’ve been seeing reports saying Tottenham Hotspur are in the race for Porto star Pepê.
It was first the Portuguese media who revealed Spurs’ interest, and then the Brazilian press backed-up the news.
Pepê had a very good season for Porto, and that’s why he was now interviewed by Globo Esporte. There, the Tottenham target was asked about the rumours about a potential summer move.
“My future is at Porto. I have a contract until 2027. I’m thinking of resting and then having a great season. We know that when we make great games, we end up awakening this interest, but my focus has always been on Porto. I always try to improve and evolve. If it happens, we evaluate it in the right time,” Pepê told Globo Esporte.
This season, Pepê has been used as a winger, which is his original position, as well as a fullback, adapted by Porto manager Sérgio Conceição. He was now asked about that, and claims he actually has a preference.
“I said that it was not a position that I identified with. I didn’t have much idea. But he was guiding me, he was helping me. It was kind of difficult to play, even more so for me, as a winger. But being able to play there, in other positions, having the confidence of the entire technical team, is essential to play well.
“We try to attack more. Have more possession of the ball, but it changes when you don’t have the ball. It’s a little bit different. Especially in the opponents’ transition, when the marking is different, positioning is different from wing-back to fullback.”
Pepê is protected by Porto with a €75m release clause, and that’s how much the Portuguese media has always said the Dragons will demand in case of a transfer. In addition to Tottenham, it’s also been said that Paris Saint Germain are interested in signing the 26-year-old this summer.
Despite the high price requested, he’s currently valued by Transfermarkt at just €25m.
