Sheffield United suffered a 8-0 crushing defeat against Newcastle United at Bramall Lane on Sunday.
Operating as a centre-back, Anel Ahmedhodžić played the full 90 minutes for the Blades and didn’t hold back when making his feelings known after the defeat to the Magpies. He made these comments to Sweden’s Viaplay, relayed by Fotbollskanalen.
Taking Sheffield United’s poor display into account, the 24-year-old has insisted that Newcastle deserved to win by a huge margin.
“Considering how many mistakes we made today, and that it was 8-0, it’s embarrassing. But they deserved to win by so much,” he said.
“We need to fight more. Today we were not ourselves. We didn’t run like we used to and didn’t fight like we usually fight. We just weren’t that focused, and if you’re not focused in the best league in the world, you’re going to lose this big.”
Sheffield United returned to the top flight after finishing second in the Championship last season. The Bosnia and Herzegovina international has suggested to his teammates that they cannot afford to make the mistakes they made against Eddie Howe’s side.
“There were too many mistakes. It’s not the Championship, every mistake becomes a goal. There was too much missing with concentration and such things. It was not my day, there is not much more to say about it,” Ahmedhodžić explained.
Sheffield United are bottom of the table with a point from six games and their poor start to the season has led to reports suggesting Paul Heckingbottom’s future at the club could be in danger.
On that, the defender said: “I haven’t heard anything, and I don’t focus on such nonsense,” he added.
