Marko Marin once had the world at his feet, hailed as the ‘German Messi’ the footballer was surrounded by hype.

A disappointing final season with Werder Bremen came before Marin’s transfer to the Premier League and Chelsea. It didn’t go well for Marin at Stamford Bridge, and then he went on four straight loans before leaving Chelsea permanently.

The attacking midfielder went on loan moves to Sevilla, Fiorentina, Anderlecht and Trabzonspor, with mixed results. Now he’s on a permanent deal at Olympiacos and trying to rebuild his career.

Speaking to German newspaper Bild, Marin was asked the reason for his Chelsea failure, and replied: “That’s easy to explain. At Chelsea I had a strong pre-season, but then I was injured shortly before the season and was out for four months.

“During the season I came to a total of 16 games. But I wanted more, I did not want to wait for my chance. Then Sevilla came up to me and I went on loan.”

Maybe a little more patience would have helped, nobody will ever know.
