Jon Dahl Tomasson’s first international break as Sweden manager isn’t passing without scrutiny. The country’s media appear ready to pounce on the Danish manager and there’s already been criticism, and even slight character assassinations, before a ball has been kicked in anger.
When the manager’s first Sweden squad was announced, he didn’t name his captain. Manchester United’s Victor Lindelöf has held the armband for quite a while and Tomasson said he wanted to communicate his decision on captaincy to the squad before announcing it publicly.
That encouraged many to believe that the Manchester United defender would be losing the armband… believing that such a fuss wouldn’t be created if Tomasson was simply set to continue with the man in place.
It appears those who believed that were wrong, with Tomasson now announcing his captain is, you guessed it, Victor Lindelöf.
Quoted by Aftonbladet, the manager has said it was “an easy choice”. Quite why he created a drama around it is therefore up for debate.
