Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is today featured in the Portuguese media, where he was interviewed by newspaper O Jogo.

The 35-year-old had a lot to say about Benfica, where he played between 2011 and 2014, and ended up having a chance to talk about two of his ex clubs in the same question.

That’s because O Jogo mentioned João Neves, the Eagles’ starlet who’s been heavily linked to Manchester United lately.

According to Matic, despite all the potential the youngster has been showing, it’s too early for him to leave Benfica, even if that’s to join the Red Devils.

“I really like the youngest… João Neves.”

“He’s fantastic. At just 19, he’s a fantastic player. He’s the future of Benfica. Of course, he’s interested some Premier League clubs too. I really like this type of player, who is young but plays with a lot of maturity.

“I think it’s too early for him to take that step of leaving. If I were him, he’d stay at Benfica for a few more years to play in the Champions League and to mature more. I’m sure his time will come, so there’s no need to rush. João is already at a great club at the moment. I’m sure his future at Benfica will be very good. I think it’s too early to leave, but of course, in the end, it’s always his decision.”

João Neves is indeed just 19-years-of-age, but is having a great season at Benfica where he became an essential piece in midfield.

Manchester United have been linked to the midfielder for months, and there was a point the Eagles even released an official statement to deny claims that the Red Devils had a priority clause over the player.

Neves’ current contract includes a €120m release clause, and Benfica are expected to demand a big price tag for his departure in the summer. That is, in case he feels ready to leave.
