Real Betis winger Assane Diao certainly has a few reasons to regret not having joined Brentford in January, and his current situation at the Spanish club should be one of them.
As today highlighted by AS, the player has ‘almost completely disappeared’ at the La Liga side, rarely playing in recent weeks.
Diao only took part in one of Betis’ last five league matches. That happened in the 3-1 win over Athletic Club Bilbao, when he had five minutes on the pitch.
The player is indeed nearly forgotten on the Spanish side’s bench, and that’s why AS recalls the attempt made by Brentford in January.
It’s said the Bees were willing to trigger his €30m release clause, but ‘nothing was finalised’. That’s why their headline says ‘From €30m to 0 minutes’, as he can’t even show why he was wanted.
It now remains to be seen what Diao’s situation will be when the summer window comes. But if the scenario continues like this, Brentford might have a chance to sign him for much less should they still be keen.
