Aston Villa are again being linked with a move for Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo, and this time the potential price range is becoming clearer.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola report that the Mozambique international remains one of the players Sporting are prepared to sell in the summer window.
The 25-year-old has been attracting interest since last year, when Aston Villa and Fenerbahçe were both prepared to pay around €20m (£17m) to secure his signing.
Sporting ultimately decided to keep him. However, the situation may now evolve differently.
Catamo has continued to grow in importance in Lisbon. Wearing the No.10 shirt this season, he has scored seven goals in 31 appearances and added four assists. Those numbers have reinforced his status in the squad and strengthened his reputation in the transfer market.
Sporting open to negotiations
Both Sporting and the player are now open to discussing a summer move. The final price could depend heavily on how Catamo finishes the season.
The report suggests a deal in the region of €20m-€30m (£17m-£26m) could be enough to secure a transfer. That places the potential fee well below the winger’s €60m (£51m) release clause.
For Aston Villa, that range is particularly relevant. The Premier League side had already explored a move last summer and were willing to reach the €20m (£17m) mark at that stage.
If Sporting are now prepared to negotiate within the €20m-€30m (£17m-£26m) bracket, Villa could return to a situation that looks far more attainable financially.
Player development boosting value
Catamo’s rise at Sporting has been gradual but steady. He initially joined the club in 2020 after arriving from Amora, following a spell at the reserves side.
Loan spells at Vitória Guimarães and Marítimo helped his development before he convinced then Sporting manager Ruben Amorim to keep him in the squad during the 2023 pre-season.
The club renewed his contract in December 2023 and again just last month, extending the deal until 2029. In July 2025, Sporting also spent €2.25m (£1.9m) to increase their share of his economic rights to 90%.
Our take: €25m might do the trick
Sporting are planning a significant summer window. Catamo is viewed as one of the players capable of generating major income.
Alongside potential sales of Morten Hjulmand and Ousmane Diomande, the Portuguese club believe they could raise at least €100m (£86m) from those two departures. That eases the pressure on Catamo’s price.
In January, A Bola reported that a €20m offer may do it. After he renewed his contract, this figure should be a bit higher. However, the realistic negotiating range still appears significantly lower than his €60m (£51m) clause. And getting a player with his level of output for around €25m would be great business.
