Oh Hyeon-gyu starred for KRC Genk in their 1-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox on Thursday.

The South Korea international came close to giving Genk the lead in the first half against Russell Martin’s side. He missed a spot-kick and was close to other chances.

Oh finally got his name on the scoresheet in the 55th minute and his goal saw Genk beat Rangers.

After the match, the striker spoke to the Belgian media explaining that he was relieved to have found the back of the net at Ibrox. That’s partly because of his failed move to VfB Stuttgart in the summer window.

Het Laatste Nieuws have relayed his comments.

“The first half was tough for me. What can I say? I was convinced I would still score, but I thank my teammates,” he said.

“Did I hesitate about taking that penalty? No, I have to believe in myself. It’s my job. I’m the striker. After my goal, everything came out. I was so emotional, and I could cry now too. The whole Stuttgart thing was still there somewhere.”

The 24-year-old spent 18 months at Celtic before joining the Jupiler Pro League club in July 2024. During his time with the Bhoys, he played against Rangers four times and failed to score.

Celtic connection makes it better for player, bitter for Rangers

After scoring for Genk against Russell Martin’s side yesterday, he celebrated by taking off his shirt, for which he received a yellow card. The former Celtic man says he’s not worried if Genk fine him for that.

“Besides, it’s very special to score at Ibrox, as a former Celtic player. Did the coach say I have to pay a fine for that yellow card? I’ll pay those fines. Whether it’s €1k, €2k, or €4k,” Oh explained.

For Rangers it’s another humiliation under Russell Martin. The manager’s job is currently hanging by a thread and it’s widely believed to be a matter of timing.
