Erik ten Hag’s problems at Manchester United are no surprising as you need to “forge a team” and not just buy one.

That’s according to former Dutch winger Andy van der Meyde, who says it would be great for Ten Haag to return to former club Ajax and rebuild them instead.

Ten Hag currently finds the pressure increasing on himself after a dismal start to the season for Manchester United in the Premier League and the Champions League.

Sunday saw their latest disappointing defeat at the hands of fierce rivals Manchester City, who secured a comfortable 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

That was the latest to raise questions about Ten Hag and what he is doing at the club, with many debating what Manchester United want to be or how they plan to get there after two big summers of spending.

For many the belief is that despite Ten Hag making big major purchases, the club are no closer to being challengers than they were before his arrival, even if they did qualify for the Champions League last season.

Van der Meyde is not surprised by that, insisting it takes more than merely spending big sums to create a winning team.

“Let him come back to Ajax and rebuild a team. That would be great,” he said.

“Things can move so quickly in football. You cannot buy a team together. You have to forge a team.”
