Long before negotiating with Liverpool, Feyenoord manager Arne Slot was involved in a little saga with Tottenham Hotspur.
Last year, when Spurs were looking for a new manager, Slot was one of the options. That move didn’t happen in the end and the manager, who is set to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, has encouraged people to believe that’s because he turned Tottenham down.
Slot’s name is obviously in the spotlight right now and every pundit in the Netherlands is sharing their opinion of him. Soccer News now shares some interesting quotes about Tottenham’s failed attempt to sign him, and the Liverpool manager-elect’s creativity with the truth.
On the Hard Gras podcast, Henk Spaan came up to say that it was not the coach who rejected Tottenham, as it was actually the Premier League club who pulled the plug.
“So he’s said that three times, but Spurs stopped negotiating. Dennis te Kloese thought it was a worthless offer,” said Henk Spaan.
“Slot is now acting as if he pulled the plug, but that is simply not the case. Tottenham Hotspur just didn’t want to pay more.”
Tottenham’s chase for Slot took place at the end of last season, as they needed a full-time replacement for Antonio Conte, while they had Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason as caretaker managers.
After the little saga with the Dutchman, they ended up getting Ange Postecoglou and seem to be very happy with that decision. Things worked out reasonable well for Slot too, Feyenoord may not have won the Eredivisie this season but he’s still be picked out by Liverpool as their crucial Klopp replacement.
