Bayern Munich’s struggles this season after Harry Kane moved there from Tottenham specifically to win trophies is currently amusing the more stone hearted among us, and journalist Van der Gijp is one of them.
The Dutchman has been joking about Kane’s situation at Bayern this season on the KieftJansenEgmondGijp podcast, explaining why he thinks it’s hilarious.
As most will be aware, Kane left Tottenham in the summer in favour of a move to Bayern Munich, eventually joining the German giants in a deal worth over €100m.
He’s been a huge hit ever since, scoring tonnes of goals, breaking goalscoring records and generally having a great time of things personally.
Collectively, though, Bayern have been a mess and currently find themselves eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen, out of the German cup and in danger of going out of the Champions League after a first-leg defeat to Lazio.
It means they risk going without a trophy for the first time since 2011/12, having won the Bundesliga every season since then as well as picking up a couple of Champions Leagues or German cups.
That would be disastrous for the club and Kane, who specifically left Tottenham for Bayern in the summer in search of trophies, a fact Van der Gijp finds hilarious.
“I could laugh if I were Harry Kane, but Kane can’t laugh about it,” Van der Gijp he said.
“You played at Tottenham for eight years and if you had stayed you would have become the legend.
“Then you go to Bayern, which has always won something over the past twenty years, and then nothing works out for the entire year. I think that’s good; I think that’s very good.
“You have been talking to your family for months, you take Bayern and now you really go for the trophies. And they just don’t win anything for a whole year!”
