West Ham’s decision to move Luis Guilherme on in January has taken the winger somewhere he never reached during his spell in London.
The Brazilian made his first appearance in a UEFA competition this week, and according to A Bola, he described the moment as a “dream come true”.
The 20-year-old started for Sporting CP against Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League, operating from the left wing in place of the suspended Pedro Gonçalves.
For Luis Guilherme, the night in Norway represented a milestone that had eluded him during his time at West Ham.
The A Bola report
Luis Guilherme arrived in Europe in July 2024 when West Ham paid around £19.5m (€23m) to sign him from Palmeiras. Despite that move, he never appeared in UEFA competition with the Premier League club.
His European fortunes changed this week. The winger made his UEFA debut immediately after joining Sporting in January 2026 for £12m (€14m), with a further £2.6m (€3m) in potential bonuses.
Speaking before the Champions League match, Luis Guilherme admitted the occasion carried personal significance.
“It’s a dream come true. All boys dream of this competition and, being a starter, even better. The adaptation was important, with help from the players and the staff. Arriving and playing also helped.”
From limited minutes in London to regular role in Lisbon
Portuguese media have repeatedly highlighted how quickly Luis Guilherme’s situation has changed since leaving West Ham.
The contrast in Lisbon is already clear. Since joining Sporting at the start of January, Luis Guilherme has accumulated 613 minutes in 10 matches. He has started eight of those games and recently recorded four consecutive starts, his longest run since becoming a senior professional.
That growing involvement has also produced moments of impact. The Brazilian ended a long goal drought when he scored in the Portuguese Cup quarter-final win over Aves SAD. The strike ended a run of nearly two years without a goal.
In that match he delivered one of his most complete performances since arriving. The winger scored once, completed 34 of 37 passes, landed three successful dribbles, and won four of five duels.
In the end, fans and local press are adoring him. He even earned comparisons with Brazilian legend Rivaldo.
Rui Borges’ trust growing
Head coach Rui Borges has repeatedly highlighted the player’s qualities and attitude. The Sporting manager believes the winger’s development simply needed the right environment.
As reported by Maisfutebol in Portugal, Borges has praised the winger’s development and attitude.
“He is a youngster with enormous quality. I think he will have a very good future. He is focused, trains well and has a lot of quality. He will adapt to the demands and competitiveness of Portuguese football.”
Borges also stressed the player’s tactical flexibility.
“He can play in the three attacking positions. He has very good technical quality, a very good understanding of the game, and he is a very focused player.”
Luis Guilherme has also benefited from circumstances in the squad. Geovany Quenda remains injured, Pedro Gonçalves has dealt with fitness issues, and Nuno Santos is still regaining rhythm. Even so, Portuguese reports insist his involvement reflects more than simple opportunity.
Another winter signing, Souleymane Faye, has played only 97 minutes in five matches and did not leave the bench against Porto or Famalicão. Luis Guilherme, by contrast, has appeared in every Sporting match since arriving.
A different stage of the career
Luis Guilherme’s European debut also closes a curious chapter in his career timeline. Before leaving Brazil, he had already played in the Copa Libertadores with Palmeiras and even scored once in the competition.
However, his move to England did not bring continental football. Instead, that opportunity arrived only after his transfer to Sporting.
For West Ham, the January deal effectively closed a project that never found rhythm on the pitch. For the player, the switch to Lisbon has quickly opened doors that had remained closed during his time in London.
