For months, the Catalan press have been covering Barcelona’s desire to sign Amadou Onana from Everton. It’s repeatedly been said he’s been seen as the Catalan club’s first choice for midfield but the reality of finances has hung over the desire.

The Catalan press have presented the scenario of the Blaugrana having to wait until they sell players, before then moving for the Everton man.

Sunday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo again states Onana has been considered Plan A for Barcelona, specifically picked out by sporting director Deco.

However, their plans are now going up in smoke with Aston Villa set to secure a deal.

That’s creating some disappointment for Barcelona, as it takes their major option out of the equation, but as it stands they simply cannot compete with the money – believed to be around £50m – on offer from Unai Emery’s side.

Therefore, other targets are going to have to be considered, with Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino seen as the alternative. Interestingly, Aston Villa had also been linked with the former Newcastle United player, before Emery himself denied it.
