Ever since he returned to the Netherlands after Ajax agreed to pay Tottenham €31m for his services, Steven Bergwijn has been under heavy scrutiny.
The reason for that is, of course, his price tag, but also the fact there were big expectations considering his importance in the national team and status as a Premier League player.
It’s fair to say his time at Tottenham didn’t exactly go to plan, with Antonio Conte, once he took over at Spurs, using the forward as a rotation option, hoping for him to provide an impact off the bench more often than not.
That’s why it was surprising to see the Premier League club ask for so much and eventually making a profit off the player, but Daniel Levy worked his magic and the player returned to his home country.
Despite his team’s victory, Wim Kieft for De Telegraaf, relayed by Soccer News, didn’t like what he saw from the former Tottenham man.
He wrote: ‘Steven Bergwijn is very disappointing in attack. He plays football like the eternal talent. It’s as if you are watching the Bergwijn from four of five years ago at PSV, when he alternated one or two good games with five bad ones.
“Bergwijn is now 25, has had an adventure in the Premier League and you can expect more from him than what he has shown at Ajax so far. Demand even more, because he is a player who was taken over from Tottenham for more than €31m’.
