Last month, Maximilian Wöber revealed that Austria manager Ralf Rangnick played a key role in his decision to leave Leeds United and join Borussia Mönchengladbach on a season-long loan deal.
The centre-back also said the possibility of extending his stay at the Bundesliga side depends on them and the Whites, and that he’s “more like a passenger” in this case.
Fast forward to January, and Friday’s edition of Rheinische Post claims the Leeds owned player’s “passenger” comment hasn’t gone down well with some at the German club. They say it’s interpreted as ‘poor commitment’ to Gladbach, but that’s largely brushed off.
The 25-year-old’s deal at Elland Road lasts until 2027 and he was only making it clear that he alone cannot decide his future. If it were down to him, the report states the defender will be keen to continue with Gladbach, and they are also willing to retain him. .
To do that, it’s said Mönchengladbach managing director of sport Roland Virkus wants to ‘reduce the transfer demands’ of Leeds United.
Rheinische Post say there’s unlikely to be any movements in this case until there’s clarity on which league the English club will play in next season.
Leeds are fourth in the table, trailing second placed Ipswich Town by seven points.
Gladbach, for their part, have started planning to retain Wöber beyond this season.
