On August 31st, Wolverhampton Wanderers completed the signing of Santiago Bueno from Girona and secured him with a five-year deal.
Girona sporting director Quique Cárcel has renewed his own contract until 2027 and spoke to the media on Thursday. His comments are relayed by L’Esportiu de Catalunya, and he also explained how Bueno’s move to Wolves took shape.
According to the director, the La Liga side weren’t expecting to part ways with the defender in the last window. That’s partly because of a hamstring injury he suffered towards the end of last season, which forced him to spend three months on the sidelines.
When going over the exits that took place in the last window, Cárcel explained why his side decided to sell the 24-year-old to Wolves.
“It has been a market that we knew would be complicated, because there would be important players who could not continue,” he said.
“With Oriol Romeu we lost a player who made his teammates better and in the end there was the case of Santi Bueno, who we didn’t think would make it due to injury.
“However, the final offer from Wolverhampton was a big offer for a player who had arrived on a free and we understood that this was the time to do it, with the luck of being able to bring in Eric Garcia at the last minute.”
The Wolves summer signing was on the bench for Uruguay’s World Cup qualifiers against both Chile and Ecuador. He could be in contention to make his Wolves debut when they host Liverpool at Molineux on Saturday.
