Tuesday’s edition of Rheinische Post has a very lengthy feature on Borussia Monchengladbach’s transfer window, and a Leeds United player gets a mention.
The man involved is Maximilian Wöber, after he spent last season on loan with the Bundesliga club and did reasonably well. Following Leeds United’s relegation to the Championship, the defender wanted to play in a first division to help his chances of reaching Euro 2024 with Austria.
He managed that and presumably his next task is to help Leeds United gain promotion to the Premier League next season.
However, there may still be some interest at Gladbach.
Sports director Roland Virkus isn’t hesitant when speaking in public about transfers, or anything really. At the weekend he blasted Ipswich Town for sending their U21s to a preseason friendly when the agreement had been for their first team.
Now he’s calmed down a little and when asked about remaining business for Gladbach, he’s quoted as saying: “These Max Wöbers might come back onto the market right at the end. Maybe they won’t play a role in their club or they’ll want to go somewhere else because there might be too many in the same position.”
Rheinische Post believe he’s directly referencing signing the Leeds United player, saying he was Gladbach’s ‘flexible defender’ last season. However, it’s made clear the Whites would be hard to convince when it comes to another loan deal.
