On Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur confirmed they’ve completed the signing of João Palhinha from Bayern Munich on loan with an option to buy.
Last summer, the midfielder joined the Bundesliga winners from Fulham, a year after his move to the Allianz Arena collapsed on deadline day.
Palhinha was a regular in the Premier League but struggled for a prominent role at Bayern Munich. He played less than 1,000 minutes from 25 games and an injury also hampered his game time.
Vincent Kompany has several options in defensive midfield and the 30-year-old wasn’t going to get regular minutes this season. He was initially reluctant to leave but relented for Tottenham.
Bayern Munich sporting CEO Max Eberl says the agreement with the north London club for the Portugal international suits all parties, Bild have relayed his comments.
“Unfortunately, Palhinha didn’t get the playing time he hoped for at Bayern last season,” he said.
“With Tottenham, we have found the best solution for all parties. João can complete a full season there at the top international level. We wish him all the best for the upcoming season.”
Tottenham have qualified for the Champions League after winning the Europa League last season. This gives the former Sporting man an opportunity to feature at the highest level with Spurs.
Palhinha impressed for Fulham and will be hoping to replicate that form on his return to London this season.
Thomas Frank’s side are reportedly paying a €5-6m loan fee and the purchase option is set at €25m. They are also said to be covering the player’s full salary during his loan stay.
