West Ham United were keen on signing Ajax’s Brian Brobbey in the winter market.
The Hammers and a few other clubs that showed interest in the 23-year-old weren’t able to secure his services.
Ajax technical director Alex Kroes has been speaking to ESPN explaining why he decided to retain the player desired by West Ham. Voetbal Primeur have relayed his comments.
In the recently concluded window, multiple claims from the Dutch media discussed West Ham’s interest in the striker.
On January 25th, De Telegraaf stated the English club were willing to do everything they can sign him. Later that day, his agent confirmed Brobbey made a trip to London after West Ham reportedly made a loan offer for him.
Three days later, De Telegraaf reporter Mike Verweij suggested the former RB Leipzig man would pick West Ham. The Netherlands international wasn’t able to secure a move to any club before the deadline.
Kroes states the Amsterdam club had no plans in letting the attacker leave on loan. He hasn’t revealed the details of the clubs that made offers for the player, but states Ajax may have been forced to sell if there was a bid for a permanent transfer.
“He and I agreed that we were not going to loan him out,” he said.
“If a club had offered €100m, I would have really thought about it. But such an offer has not been made.”
“That is the role that Ajax has in the pyramid. If a serious offer comes, we have to think about whether we keep or sell someone. This does not only apply to Brobbey.”
