Over the past few weeks, there has been a lot of talk regarding Lecce being interested in Celtic’s Gustaf Lagerbielke, who is on the periphery of Brendan Rodgers’ plans at Parkhead.
The centre-back, despite being signed over the summer, has hardly played for his new team, which is why the possibility of him leaving, even if temporarily, was brought up in January.
Lecce, however, were always said to be struggling to meet the finances for any deal Celtic would approve, and now we see their technical director, Pantaleo Corvino, hinting that a move for Lagerbielke will not take place, as relayed by Gazzetta dello Sport.
The newspaper cover what Lecce will do between now and the end of the transfer window, and quickly move onto the defence.
There, they explain that Corvino has ‘admitted that he is not looking for other central defenders’, which has come as a bit of a surprise before of the recent ‘talk of interest’ in the Celtic defender.
The director said: “We have reliable players like Pongracić and Baschirotto who are deserving of the starting role. Then we have Touba, who is in the Africa Cup of Nations. We can also count on Blin in that role, and a youngster from 2005, Sebastian Esposito can come in from the Primavera.”
Therefore, it appears that Brendan Rodgers, who wanted to thin out his defence, will have to find another solution if the desire to get rid of Lagerbielke really is there.
