With so much money floating around football these days, there’s been an increase in those looking to profit from it.
That’s particularly true when it comes to transfers, with every man and his dog looking for a slice of the pie regardless of the transfer fees involved.
The bigger the transfer fee, the bigger the entourage of people wanting their cut. Take Davinson Sánchez’s move to Tottenham.
The central defender joined Spurs in 2017, with them electing to pay £36m for the Colombian following his impressive performances for Ajax in the Europa League.
That move was an expensive one for both clubs, particularly Spurs, with Sánchez standing as Tottenham’s record signing until the £54m arrival of Tanguy Ndombélé this summer.
It seems there were plenty of people who wanted some of that money, with Ajax director Marc Overmars explaining they found themselves in an office full of agents ahead of the move.
“The football world is getting crazier. One player may have five different agents,” he told the Ajax Podcast, relayed by Sport Nieuws.
“(Davinson Sánchez), for example. Before his move (to Tottenham) we were in Edwin van der Sar’s office with six agents: two from Italy, two from Argentina, one from Uruguay and two from England.
“In fact, there were seven. What do I think? That’s going to cost money. The interests are getting bigger.
“For agents, players, family. Some transfers take months. Then I think: why does that have to take so long? is also a bit of my style: don’t think too much, but do it.”
