West Ham United’s Edson Álvarez has been on loan at Fenerbahçe since August.

The Turkish club have a €22m purchase option and consider this to be ‘excessive’.

On Thursday, Claro Sports denied Tigres UANL making an offer for the West Ham man. They also stressed the Mexico international’s desire is to continue in Europe.

De Telegraaf cover Ajax’s interest in defensive midfielder. Ajax sporting director Marijn Beuker made a trip to Istanbul to negotiate for a new No.6. He also had a meeting with Álvarez’s entourage to discuss a move in January.

Soccer News looks at the challenges Ajax will face to bring the West Ham owned player back to Amsterdam. He spent four years with the Eredivisie side before leaving them for the Hammers in August 2023.

They tried to sign him before he joined Fenerbahçe in the summer. The Istanbul club are keen on signing Al-Ittihad’s N’Golo Kanté, and his arrival could open the exit door for the Mexican.

According to Soccer News, Beuker met Álvarez’s agent Nathan van Kooperen in Turkey. If the director is keen of bringing him back to Ajax, the report insist he will have to ‘come up with a large bag of money’.

West Ham player going nowhere

Ajax would be looking to sign him on loan but would need to make a financial effort.

He earns €6.4m per year at West Ham. The Dutch club would have to pay €3.2m for a six month loan deal, making Álvarez their highest paid player. This makes it complicated for Ajax to sign him in January.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahçe director Devin Özek has confirmed they have no plans to release him. Voetbal International have relayed his comments.

“Many clubs are interested in Edson Álvarez. I can say clearly: Edson is a very important player for us, both on and off the pitch. He is fully focused on the team’s performance and will not leave,” he said.
