Last week, Calciomercato reported Sunderland are facing resistance from Matteo Guendouzi amidst interest in the midfielder.

Despite that, it was said the Black Cats are trying to convince the player for a move.

Sunderland’s interest in the Frenchman has now caused some alarm among Lazio supporters and their local media.

Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani spoke to DAZN about Guendouzi’s future. He made it clear that a meeting has been held with manager Maurizio Sarri and futures of multiple players have been considered.

Words diluted by financial realities

He said, via L’Interista“The situation is crystal clear. During the international break, we had a long conversation with the president and the manager, and we discussed the January transfer window.

“We asked the manager for players who are essential to the project, to further strengthen and give greater impetus to a new project that started from scratch.”

He assured Lazio fans that the club will be able to operate in the January window.

“Given that football is made with money and ideas, the president has reassured us that we can operate in the transfer market.

“We will try to retain the best players, as Sarri wanted. Otherwise we would go against what he said: that we started from scratch on a two- or three-year journey to strengthen and bring Lazio back to the level it deserves.”

He also urged Lazio supporters to remain calm about their dire financial situation.

“It wasn’t easy to do without Milinkovic-Savic, Luis Alberto, and Immobile. There’s a lot of work to do; we’ve done a lot, and there’s a lot to do. I tell the fans to stay calm, because we’re working humbly for the good of the club and the fans.”

Maurizio Sarri is a big fan of Guendouzi but he might not have much say. This is because Lazio want to earn money from sales to make new signings.

They picked up a transfer ban in the summer due to their inability to do that. As a result, they wouldn’t want a repeat, with the club eighth in Serie A.
