Today’s news from the Daily Record that Manchester United are prepared to offer €20m for Diogo Dalot should come as quite concerning for Porto.
That’s because when covering the news, the Portuguese media mentions information that the original report didn’t: that’s the amount of Dalot’s release clause, giving the Dragons no right to turn the offer down.
That’s why Porto are relying on the player’s wish to stay at the club. Outlet O Jogo reports that the Dragons have the intention to give him a new contract, extending the current deal which only runs until 2019.
The player’s status in the squad is a very important factor in this case. Since Ricardo Pereira has just been sold to Leicester City, that makes Dalot the first option for the right-back position. It means he will be more appreciated at the club, and Porto will work harder at keeping him.
So for Manchester United to get the 19-year-old, what they need to do is to convince him before he signs a renewal with Porto.
If Jose Mourinho’s scouts have been watching Porto with the intention of buying a right back, then the big question is why they didn’t just sign Ricardo Pereira for €20-25m before he moved to Leicester City.
