Newcastle United star Alexander Isak remains hopeful of avoiding further setbacks after recovering from an injury in February.

The striker is currently on international duty with Sweden and had a chat with SVT Nyheter.

Isak struggled with a groin injury between October and November, forcing him to miss six games for Newcastle. He suffered another setback earlier this year and was out of action for close to a month.

A thigh injury forced the 24-year-old to spend more than three months on the sidelines during the first half of the 2022/23 season.

The report states the former Real Sociedad star’s season at Newcastle has been ‘anything but optimal’ due to concern over his fitness. The Sweden international has scored 16 goals from 30 games in all competitions and that includes 17 league starts this season.

“It has actually been difficult. Precisely because it has been difficult to get into your flow or when you have just done it, you have had a setback. It’s almost a little nicer to know that you’re away for a longer time than these small hiccups,” he said.

“You do your rehab and then you get injured again. It has been a bit hard. Now I have been healthy and have felt good, hopefully I can stay healthy too.”

When asked to provide insight into the nature of his setbacks, the Swede revealed it has been a recurring injury and the situation at the Tyneside club has also not helped him. Eddie Howe had to deal with injuries to several players at Newcastle for most of this season.

“I have had problems with my groin, it has been a bit recurring. The situation in the team has not helped with the availability of players either,” Isak explained.

“Many times, I’ve come back from an injury and have had to play three games in a week, some 90 minutes, and that’s not optimal. But at the same time, we have had important games.”

Isak played the full 90 minutes in Sweden’s friendly defeat to Portugal last week.
