That didn’t take long.
Less than an hour after Manchester United announced José Mourinho had left the club, El Confidencial get the Zinedine Zidane ball rolling.
The former Real Madrid manager was linked with a move to Old Trafford even when the Portuguese was still in charge, yet multiple reports suggested there was no interest from the Frenchman.
That hasn’t stopped the Spanish outlet from explaining that, regardless of his own feelings about the job it seems, Zidane is one of the ‘main candidates’ for the role, and a ‘wanted manager’.
As the Red Devils announced in the same statement, no decision regarding Mourinho’s replacement will be made before the end of the season, and an interim manager, probably someone like Nicky Butt or Michael Carrick, will take over for the time being.
With Zidane taking a year off to ‘recharge his batteries’, his candidacy for the role fits the bill, since he could take over at the end of the current campaign, having had his sabbatical.
El Confidencial also suggest Mourinho’s sacking could accelerate things, as Juventus, who want their former player to join their board in some shape or form, could feel threatened by the vacancy at Old Trafford, and make a move sooner rather than later.
It all seems like easy speculation for now, however, and we doubt Manchester United, other than having a vague idea, will make a decision anytime soon.
