Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade has insisted he “didn’t have to think for long” about joining the club this summer.
Stern have an interview with the Newcastle star today. He discusses various matters, including his big move to St James Park this summer.
The giant striker joined the Magpies in an €80m deal from VfB Stuttgart. That could rise over €90m with various add-ons if he proves to be a success in the North East.
He arrived at the club as a replacement for Alexander Isak, who left at the end of the window to join Liverpool. It was very much a rapid, last minute transfer turnaround for everyone involved.
The deal certainly raised eyebrows as Woltemade had spent the summer being linked with a move to Bayern Munich. The German giants were reportedly keen on him as an alternative and long-term replacement for Harry Kane. They, though, refused to pay Stuttgart’s demands.
Several reports in Germany made it clear that Woltemade was keen on the move. All indications were that he would join Bayern at some point. Instead, he joined Newcastle, where he’s been flourishing ever since.
He’s since admitted that Eddie Howe was key to him making the move. Now he admits he didn’t even think long about the transfer.
“I had two days of reflection,” he said.
“But I didn’t have to think long anyway, because Newcastle United are a great club playing in the strongest league in the world. My goal has always been to compete with the best.”
