Newcastle United are hovering for the signing of Werder Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus this summer, as his ‘departure draws nearer’.
BILD Hamburg report on the 22-year-old goalkeeper today as he nears the end of his first season as Werder Bremen’s number one goalkeeper.
Newcastle United interest is known
The goalkeeper was one of the key players in securing the club’s survival in the Bundesliga this season. But his first season could also be his last.
Signs are mounting that he will depart the German club this summer. Werder Bremen want to generate revenue by June 30th to improve their financial results for the fiscal year.
Two players on their radar for a sale: Karim Coulibaly and Mio Backhaus. Negotiations will take place over the defender in the coming weeks. And so, focus is shifting towards selling the U21 international goalkeeper.
Newcastle United’s interest in him has been confirmed. The belief is that they have the necessary funds for a transfer. That will certainly be the case if Anthony Gordon is sold to Bayern Munich this summer.
They will potentially face competition from Freiburg, should goalkeeper Noah Atubolu depart. If they can offer Champions League football, by winning the Europa League, that would make them more attractive than Newcastle.
€12m asking price
But that’s a big if at this moment in time. Both sides are in the mix regardless, with Backhaus currently valued at around €12m. in modern terms, that’s a bargain signing.
It does not appear that the Magpies have made their move yet, though. They are perhaps waiting for the season to end and deciding on budgets before moving forwards.
But there is a belief that the Magpies are hovering for the deal. And, crucially, Werder Bremen are open to transfer talks as they look to raise funds and balance their books.
