Denmark head coach Brian Riemer has declined to disclose private talks with Kasper Schmeichel. This comes after the Celtic goalkeeper’s withdrawal from the national squad last week.
Schmeichel recently pulled out of the Denmark squad for the next international break, citing a shoulder injury.
The decision caused confusion in Denmark after Martin O’Neill revealed the veteran had been feeling much better on Friday. Riemer later admitted that the national setup had concerns.
“Our talks are private” — Riemer shuts down questions
The subject was then put to the Denmark coach again today, with BOLD relaying his comments. But he was unwilling to disclose what has been said between him and the Celtic goalkeeper.
“Kasper is a goalkeeper who has played 120 international matches for Denmark and has been a huge part of the national team’s history,” he said.
“He is probably the one I know who has the biggest and most bleeding heart for Denmark, so it is natural to ask that question.
“As I would do with all other players, our talks are of course a private matter between me and them. That is also the case here.”
What it means for Denmark and Celtic
Riemer insisted that responsibility for updates on the injury lies with Celtic. As a result, he wants all questions directed at the Scottish club instead.
“What I am dealing with is that Kasper is injured. Therefore, everything that concerns his injury and Celtic, I will direct the questions that way because it is none of our business,” he added.
He confirmed Denmark will move forward with the players currently available. He is likely to turn to West Ham’s Mads Hermansen, with Filip Jorgensen out injured.
“We are dealing with the players we can select and the players who will perform for us in the upcoming training camp,” he concluded.
Denmark now prepare to face North Macedonia on 26 March without their most experienced goalkeeper. It’s a major blow, in a game which is crucial to their hopes of making the World Cup this summer.
