Richarlison Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison has moved quickly to shut down a fake quote claiming he would refuse to play at the next World Cup, distancing both himself and the club from a politically charged statement circulating online.

The Brazil international used his official social media account to deny ever saying he would boycott the tournament. The false claim, initially shared by a British page, alleged he had stated: “I refuse to play the World Cup in the United States if they don’t stop this war against Iran.”

Richarlison responded publicly in both Portuguese and English. In his clarification, he wrote: “Just to be clear, because the fake news has gone too far: I never made that statement. Although I am against any kind of war and conflict, I never said I wouldn’t play for the Brazilian national team at the World Cup. I hope everyone who shared this lie takes it back and deletes their posts.”

The Tottenham player made it clear he supports peace but rejected the idea that he would step away from international duty.

Swift denial from Spurs forward

As Tottenham is entering a decisive stage of the season, distractions around senior players are rarely welcome.

Richarlison remains an important squad member in north London. Although injuries have interrupted his rhythm since joining from Everton, he is still viewed as a key attacking option when fit. He even scored a goal and had a good cameo in their latest defeat away at Fulham.

The fake quote quickly gained traction online. However, his direct response appears designed to stop the story escalating further. Importantly, he did not criticise any governing body or tournament host. Instead, he focused solely on correcting the misinformation.

That distinction reduces any potential diplomatic or commercial fallout for Tottenham.

What this means for Tottenham

This Richarlison episode is another example that underlines how quickly misinformation can drag players into off-field controversy.

Had the statement been genuine, it would have created obvious tension ahead of a major international tournament. It could also have raised questions about player availability and club positioning.

Instead, Richarlison’s swift clarification protects both his personal reputation and Tottenham’s stability.
