Spanish newspaper Marca have confirmed Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane was withdrawn from Sunday’s game against Girona because of a muscle problem.
The Spanish champions suffered a shock defeat to the Catalan club, and Varane could now be a doubt for the game against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.
Varane’s bad luck with injuries continued in the 2-1 defeat to Girona when the Frenchman was replaced by Nacho at half time. It’s not yet known the extent of Varane’s injury, but with the Champions League clash with Tottenham just three days away, he’snow a doubt.
The France international played in the first tie with Tottenham in Spain a couple of weeks ago, but his own goals earned the Premier League side a point. It’s likely if Varane doesn’t recover from his muscle problem then Nacho will partner Sergio Ramos in the centre of Real Madrid’s defence.
Tottenham also have their injury concerns with Harry Kane, after the forward missed Saturday’s defeat to Manchester United. With this latest news with Varane, Tottenham will be hoping to get Kane fit for the game at Wembley, as they look to consolidate their place at the top of the group.
The London side currently lead second placed Real Madrid after their draw in the Bernabeu.
