When Alfonso Pedraza arrived at Leeds United there was optimism all around the club. It was the end of the winter transfer window, and Leeds had managed to keep hold of their best players.

Garry Monk’s stock was rising and Pontus Jansson was a cult hero to guide his Leeds United troops back to the Premier League.

Pedraza came from Villarreal on loan with an option to make the deal permanent for around €10m, in the event Leeds got promoted. Such was the confidence there was even discussion over whether that amount was too high.

It was Lugo who lost out and saw their promotion bid fall to pieces. Villarreal had loaned Pedraza to Lugo for the whole season, but had a recall clause.

El Progreso say the Leeds switch was ‘a decisive low’ in Lugo’s season. Pedraza scored 6 goals and added 8 assists in the first half of the campaign. Before he left for Leeds, the Spanish club’s goal ratio was 1.4 per game, without Pedraza that dropped to 1.0.

At Leeds United, the 21 year old only managed one goal in the Championship, unable to have a big impact on promotion.

The player’s future is once again up in the air.
